SP Unit Tank Train-The Oil Cans Train

In 1983 SP began hauling the largest daily unit oil tank train from Bakersfield to Dolores Yard in Carson,California. The official letters for the unit tank train were BKDOU,which stands for Bakersfield-Dolores,however it was better known as the Oil Cans Train or simply The Cans.A typical SP oil can train was about 78 loaded tank cars which was about 2 million gallons of crude oil! This was a very heavy train at about 11,000 tons.
